Tips To Avoid Indoor Air Pollution

Tobacco smoke is an obvious cause of indoor air pollution. Mold growing in your basement, on your drywall or anywhere indoors, can send spores throughout the environment, as well as odors and toxins that can as well make people sick. Synthetic fabrics and furnishings and individual products like paints can release harmful chemicals into the air causing pollution. If you use propane or gas, or wood stoves or fireplaces in your home, improper ventilation will all contribute to indoor air pollution. Here are some tips to avoid indoor air pollution.

To improve your environment, do not cover up smells with chemical scents from air fresheners. Instead, open the windows for a daily airing. Although this can be difficult on a cold day or places that are freezing in winter. In cold areas, it may be worth looking at air cleaning solutions. These can save energy costs while bringing fresh air into the house.

Proper choice of cleansing products.

When it comes to choosing cleaning products that do not produce VOC’s, it is essential to read product labels carefully. Consider using micro cloths and plain water for routine cleaning of hard surfaces like counter tops, to reduce the amount of cleaning products you use.

By careful choices of the products you use and buy, it is possible to lessen the amount of pollution in the home significantly. This will contribute towards making your home environment much more pleasant and healthy.

Dusting your house properly.

When you dust your house with a cloth, you are often spreading dust around. Use vacuum based tools to dust with instead. Make sure you don’t avoid difficult to reach areas like space under beds, drapes and moldings.

Put the vacuum on a low suction level and run the small objects over the front of the vacuum nozzle. This sucks all the dust off without the object disappearing into space. Note: Be sure to use a scrap material to cover the vacuum nozzle as it can get ruined in the process.

Other Tips

Keep humidity to 50% or less. You can use a humidifier to aid in this but make sure you frequently empty the unit to prevent the growth of mold in the tank. Keep stuffed animals and busy shelves to a minimum as these are real dust-catcher locations. If you have lots of stuffed toys vacuum them frequently.. but carefully of course!!
